Ren, run and trained by Blake Byrum, started her nursery career this year and came in 3rd and 1st and is now qualified for the 2025 Nursery Finals!

Chev is now THREE and I'm so excited to see where this year will take us. We start our trial season soon, and he's already started off his NASDA season last weekend. We have scentwork trials to try, herding trials, maybe one or two disc events, and to start bikejoring! He's truly a do-it-all boy, and so grateful to have him. We went hiking for his birthday yesterday, and we'll work some sheep today ❤️❤️

We'll switching gears and doing some scentwork this weekend, before getting ready for some herding trials this spring. I have Chev and Fia entered, and Udon entered in his first trial in April. I've been really pleased with everyone's progress (mine included!), and signed up for another clinic in May so I can keep working on me too. The dogs are well trained for the task, and now I'm fine-tuning my handling and trial skills (which will take a lot longer 🫠🤣).

I've moved some dogs and adjusted some things to better suit me and my goals, and will have to formally introduce all the new faces (and say goodbye to a few others!). While I'm more of a "pet person" in that I'd always had dogs their entire lives, I know that's not feasible when trying to pick dogs I want to trial, breed, and live with. The bar is high and fairly specific--I want dogs that work well, that pass their health testing, that have good tug and toy drive, have good handler focus, can get along with other dogs in close quarters, and have solid temperaments--AND I have to enjoy them. If they don't tick all of those boxes, then I make sure I find them the best home where someone will enjoy them for all that they are--and while sometimes it's hard to let them go, I know it's better for us both in the long run. I'm so excited to train this new crop of pups (and with some help from some puppy raising friends!), figure out what makes them tick, and get them situated into the lives that will suit them best, whether that be with me or someone else. ❤️

As the farm slowly starts to gear up for spring, 2025 will be the year of protecting my peace. ❤️

I've spent years managing someone else's emotions, to the point I couldn't see when others were being disingenuous around me. Since splitting with my soon-to-be ex-husband, I've spent a lot of time focusing on my dogs, my goals, and our happiness. I'm going to continue to work at being the best handler I can for my dogs, continue to train them in a way that always respects the dog they are, and go out and have fun with them. We're going to do disc things, we're going to do scent things, and we're going to do herding things. ❤️

I've got a lot of new prospects this season, and my main goal is to make sure they are all happy, functioning members of society. Some will get disc foundations and some HRD/scent foundations along the way, but overall I'm so excited to just ENJOY puppies again, go on hikes, and spend time with my dogs. I'm so thankful to the friends that are helping raise puppies, helping with the farm, and overall have been there for me through all of this with honest intentions. I'm grateful for everyone and the little farm that is slowly finding its footing again. ❤️

Fia has really been coming along in her training! She's always been a dog with a lot of heart and loves to train, but did not train up as fast as a dog that was more natural (like Chev). She'll be 3 in May, and will soon be starting her open career on the trial field. I don't expect her to sweep the competition in the beginning, but she is a dog that learns by experience and it's time she gets more!

I was really impressed with her last weekend at the clinic with Faansie. She's starting to be a dog I can depend on for any sort of task, and she'll keep her cool when the sheep get aggressive without giving them an inch. She's been a tremendous dog on the farm during the lambing season, and I'm ready to see what we can accomplish out in open together ❤️

While the farm has dealt with some pretty bad flooding right now, we're due for some freezing temperatures and a few inches of snow again. This weather has been wild this winter, but the dogs don't mind the snow one bit.
I'm over the mud, but I'll take some days like this again!

While I've gotten a lot of exciting young prospects this winter, it's also time to start the next set of nursery prospects. Niamh will be a year old at the end of the month (time has really flown!), and will get regular, easy works where she learns to take care of her sheep. This is her first test, where I'll see if she can handle general training and pressure from the sheep, the weather, and me, to see if she wants to be a future trial dog. It's always an exciting time, when I get to see "what's under the hood" -- I'm ready to get her started!
